On July 12, 2021, the design report and closing ceremony of 2021 Summer Design Workshop of School of Architecture of Chang'an University was held in Weishui Campus of Chang'an University. Led by Mao Lei, founder of MONOLITH ARCHITECTS, the workshop was titled "New Life, New Space, New City: China in the 21st Century". Yu Kanhua, vice Dean of School of Architecture, Chang'an University, Zhang Lei, associate professor of the Department of Architecture, Ren Juan, Wang Jiawei, Chen Xi, Lu Ye and other teachers of the Department of Architecture attended the activity and acted as the reply judges of this report.

Wang Jiawei presided over the design report and closing ceremony. Vice Dean Yu Kanhua appreciated and affirmed the hard work of all teachers and students participating in the workshop, and highly praised of the important role of architect workshop in undergraduate architecture teaching. Before the formal presentation, architect Mao Lei gave a brief introduction to the judges on the general situation, teaching methods and design objectives of the workshop.

In the process of reporting, 15 third-year architecture students explained and showed their own topics to the judges in detail from the reasons of topic selection, research and analysis, concept deduction and design results. The judges also had in-depth communication with students from different perspectives on the presentation of the results and put forward professional suggestions for each student's specific problems in a heated discussion atmosphere.

This summer workshop is based on the "open teaching" part of the "Architectural Design (IV)" course of grade 3 in Architecture of Chang'an University. The teaching guidance group is made up of architect Mao Lei and grade 3 teachers Wang Jiawei and Ren Juan, lasting for 8 days. The training in research methods, analysis methods and design methods of the workshop is different from that of the traditional third-year design courses. Combined with relevant theoretical courses, the workshop provides teachers and students with multiple perspectives and rich experience. An exhibition of the research results will be held at the beginning of next semester.

Mao Lei graduated from The Berlage Institute in the Netherlands, worked in the headquarters of OMA in Netherlands, and was invited to participate in the Venice Biennale, Rotterdam Biennale, Beijing Design Week and other exhibitions. He has won awards in international design competitions such as AIM, Archoutloud and Young Architects Competition.
